Aboriginal Language Tutor - An Aboriginal identified position

Aboriginal language tutors are local Aboriginal language speakers. Schools are encouraged to support Aboriginal community members in their role as speakers and teachers of Aboriginal languages.

The identification of appropriate Aboriginal people for the role of Aboriginal language tutors is a matter for the local Aboriginal community and or the local AECG. Schools are required to ensure that all appropriate checks are completed and approved prior to the employment of any staff.

It is essential that the Aboriginal language tutor has additional support from the classroom teacher for the behaviour management of students.

The Aboriginal language tutor is not an Aboriginal Education Officer or a School Learning Support Officer.

Aboriginal language tutors are responsible for:

  • Collaboratively planning, implementing and evaluating Aboriginal language teaching and learning programs in consultation with local Aboriginal community, classroom teachers, Aboriginal language and culture nest teacher, elders and where possible, language speakers.
  • Providing support and resources for students to learn an Aboriginal language that has been approved by the local school community.
  • Working closely with teaching staff, including local educational services staff, to ensure the tuition provided is relevant to the students learning needs.
  • Keeping records on students learning and Aboriginal language.
  • Attending Aboriginal language professional learning activities to develop effective strategies in providing tuition in the teaching of Aboriginal languages.

Selection for this position is based on merit and will be offered to the person whose skills, local cultural knowledge and experience best matches the position requirements.

Successful applicants will be required to have a current working with children check and complete mandatory New South Wales department of education pre-employment checks including a national police criminal record check.

An application of no more than one page, including the names of at least two referees, should be forwarded to Lightning Ridge Central School by 3 PM Friday, 3 November 2017.
